The landscape of licensed premises, including manufacturers, importers and wholesalers, from the time licensing was first implemented in 1987 until June 2000, is changing as depicted by the chart below. Overall, it is shown that the number of licensed premises is increasing year by year. While the newly evolved traditional manufacturing premises continue to increase steadily, the pharmaceutical manufacturing premises has shown slight contraction recently. This is mainly due to reasons such as merging of companies, downsizing to traditional medicine premises, cessation of operations due to suspensions and closures, failure to renew expired licenses and declassification of certain products as medical devices.

The total number of licensed importers also shows an increasing trend due to the implementation of licensing for traditional importers, effectively enforced from 1st January 1999.
